The Djembe is an African 'talking' drum, the cords securing the goatskin membrane can be squeezed to create minute changes in pressure producing slight variations in pitch. Originally carved from the 'Djem' tree, a hardwood native to north and central Africa, the indigenous word for goat was 'be' hence the name.
