For subtle flowing shifting of colors, blending emotions and harmonies like gentle swirling fog, nothing works quite like a pad. The word “pad” itself stems from the Flemish word for ‘a bundle of straw’, and in the 1700’s came to mean ‘something soft’. The verb meaning ‘to stuff, increase the amount of’ is first recorded in 1827, from criminal usage of the noun, or perhaps it is an imitative word for ‘a soft muffled sound’. It’s true origins are shrouded in mystery, and perhaps todays keyboard pad sounds convey some of that mystery in the quiet nebulous sounds they produce.
